INITIAL: July 17, 2025 | 8:42 p.m.
On July 17 at approximately 2:45PM, officers located an individual in the area of Garza Way and Potomac Mill Cir in Woodbridge (22192) who was wanted in connection to a brandishing that had occurred the day prior. In the earlier incident, the suspect reportedly brandished a firearm towards an unknown victim who was walking along Colchester Rd in Woodbridge during an unprovoked encounter. No injuries were reported, and the suspect left the area in a vehicle. Law enforcement had been attempting to locate the suspect since that incident, and the same man was reportedly involved in a separate similar encounter today on Birchdale Ave. While searching for the suspect, officers ultimately located him parked in a vehicle in the roadway on Potomac Mills Cir which circles the Potomac Mills shopping complex. Officers attempted to negotiate with the man for multiple hours for a peaceful surrender. At one point, officers surrounded the suspect’s vehicle to take him into custody. The suspect then exited the vehicle and began running towards the mall, armed with a crossbow, when he was shot and killed by police. No officers or uninvolved community members were injured during the encounter. The deceased was identified as a 52-year-old man of the Woodbridge area. The incident is contained and isolated to the roadway. There is no active threat to the community at this time. The Prince William County Police Department, at the request of Chief Peter Newsham, has requested the regional Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) to oversee the investigation as an independent body. More information will be released when available. The investigation continues.
